Volleyball T-Shirt Quilt

I recently had the opportunity to make a t-shirt quilt on commission. Nancy's daughter is a senior on her college volleyball team. Nancy decided that she wanted a t-shirt quilt to commemorate Rachel's years of playing competitively. The quilt includes quite a few t-shirts from various tournaments she participated in. It also has a lot of her old jerseys from both high school and college volleyball.

Rachel was lucky enough to get the same number for both high school and college. I put her number in all four corners of the quilt. The bottom left is a shirt from high school. The top corners are jerseys from college. The one in the bottom right is special because it is actually vintage. Once a year they would play in the old jerseys that the university used back in the day. Athletic fabric has come a long way in the last few decades!

Naturally, this quilt had to be quilted with volleyballs. The volleyball design I chose is Modern Volleyball by Jessica Schick. I like the way the lines on the balls are spaced a little bit apart to make it look three-dimensional. It gives the quilting the pillowy appearance of real volleyballs.

For the back of the quilt, I used a blue swirl flannel. It is very soft and cozy. Flannel is the just the thing to make this a great snuggle quilt.  At 61" by 74" it is the perfect size for curling up on the couch.

Nancy took the quilt to present to Rachel at her senior night. She said that Rachel was completely surprised and loved the quilt. You can just see how happy she is in this picture from her senior night.  I'm thrilled that I got to be a part of something so special that she will cherish for years to come.
