Finished: Baby Bordered Squares

My coworker is going to have her baby any day now.  I finished this quilt just in time!  I used a Life in the Jungle layer cake by Doohikey Designs for Riley Blake.  I chose this fabric because my coworker loves pastels, but I didn't want to make something that looked super babyish.  I want her son to continue using it as he gets older.  This fabric was perfect.  I really like all of the little animals.

For the back, I used a grey spotted flannel by Robert Kaufman.  This was the first time I used flannel for a back, and I absolutely love it.  Robert Kaufman flannels are very high quality.  It is super soft, and it adds an extra bit of dimension to the quilting.  I think I'm going to have a hard time choosing between pieced backs and flannel backs in the future.

I quilted each square individually, with swirls around half of them, and wishbones around the others.  I alternated seven different designs for the centers of the squares.  I am thrilled at how well the quilting shows up on the back.

Of course, I always, always label my quilts.  I think it is so sad when no one is left that remembers where a quilt came from.  At the very least, I include who the quilt is for, that I made it, and the year it was completed.  Sometimes I include a note about the inspiration or the occasion that the quilt was made for.  If I name the quilt, that goes on the label, too.  This time, I kept it simple.

I was able to swing by her house to drop this off after I finished it.  She was absolutely thrilled.  She lit up and gave me a great big hug.  Is there anything better than giving away a quilt and seeing the sheer delight of the recipient?
