Finished: Hopscotch

I made this baby quilt for a dear friend's first child.  Christina and I met during my first summer as a camp counselor and we quickly grew close.  Even though the years have put much distance between us, it always feels like no time has passed when we get together.  I couldn't have been more excited when she told me she was expecting.

Never one to pass up the opportunity for a surprise, Christina waited until the baby arrived to learn that it was a little girl.  Since I wanted to finish the quilt before the baby was born, I went with bright fabrics that don't automatically make you think of one gender over the other.

After some deliberation, I decided to go with custom quilting.  Each of the squares has a swirl going across the center, and the rectangles are filled with wishbones.  Swirls and wishbones are my two favorite quilting designs, so it was fun to combine them in this quilt.

For the back, I used minky with large white dots on a lime green background.  This playful fabric complements the top perfectly, and goes nicely with the darker green binding.  While I completed the quilt before the baby was born, I waited to write on the label so I could personalize it with her name.

My mom recently made a trip back to Michigan and was kind enough to deliver the quilt while she was there.  As much as I love to finish a quilt, I am even happier when I know it is safely in the arms of its new owner, especially when they are as thrilled as Christina was to receive it.
